Book Review : Divergent ♡

A few days ago, I managed to successfully finish one of the best books I have read in a long time which goes by the name Divergent. I'm sure most of you reading this has heard of the book, because its now released in cinemas plus its a hugely successful book itself that most of the worlds population has read, or is going to attempt to read.
I am such a bookworm, therefore I love finding a great book that I can curl up in bed and read after a long hard day of school or whatever I did that day that results me into tiredness but excitement to continue the book if it's a good one and this book was most certainly that kind of book!
I am not going to give many spoilers as I want you if you have not read it to go read it after finishing reading this because it is that amazing.

Main plot

I said that I wouldn't give spoilers, however its only fair as this is a book review to go over the main details of the book. The book itself is a dystopian themed novel set in a futuristic Chicago, where survivors of a war have been divided into five different factions based on personality traits: Abnegation (selfless), Candor (honest), Amity (peaceful), Erudite (intelligent) and Dauntless (brave). Every year in this society, every sixteen year old have to take a test which tells them which faction they are most suited to being in, however they can decide either to remain in their original faction with their family or transfer into a new faction but will never be able to see their family again, only on Visiting Day. The main character Beatrice (later on known as Tris), is born into an Abnegation family, however is questioning whether she should be in that faction as she doesn't feel naturally selfless. Her aptitude test shows an inconclusive result, showing potential three factions that she could be in: Abnegation, Erudite and Dauntless, and finds out that she is Divergent and must not tell anybody this information. On Choosing Day she decides to leave her faction Abnegation and join Dauntless, whereas her brother tranfers into Erudite. She is introduced to Four, her instuctor who explains that not all the initiates who have entered Dauntless will stay as only the top 10 can remain part of it. Tris soon makes friends with other tranfer initiates Christina, Al and Will however not all of them become her friends, she soon becomes enemies with other tranfers Peter, Molly and Drew. Initiation is split into three stages; 1) learning how to handle guns and knives, and fighting other oppenents 2) simulations on their fears 3) fear landscape that gathers all their fears into simulations like the aptitude test and use the skills that they have learnt throughout to overcome each fear whilst being timed. Throughout the stages, Tris's relationship with Four grows and she starts learning more about him than she already knows. He soon discovers that Erudite has a plan emerging to use the Dauntless to stage an attack on Abnegation, because the Abnegation control the government and Erudite are jealous and criticize the leaders. Tris successully overcomes her seven fears in the fear landscape and is ranked at the top. After the test, Tris along with the other Dauntless members are injected with a 'tracking serum'. Tris realises that the Erudite will use the tracking serum to force the members of Dauntless to carry out the invasion of the Abnegation, however the serum doesn't work on Tris nor Four (now known as Tobias) because they are Divergent, soon captured by Erudite leader Jeanine. She injects Four with a different serum that controls what he can see and hear and sentences Tris to death. She is trapped in a tank filling up with water but her mother rescues her and reveals some shocking information to Tris. She reunites with her father, brother and Marcus, Fours father and go to the Dauntless compound to source the simulation controlling the members and try to stop it. They succeed and shut down the simulation and free the remaining Dauntless from their mind control. The group then board a train to the Amity to find the rest of Abnegation survivors leading to events that will happen in the next book in the series, Insurgent.

My views

Overall the book was very well-written, that clearly described this dystopian world and the emotions of the characters and the violence that occurred very well. This type of book is sure to never leave my mind as it was so engaing and a real page-turner, I managed to read the full book in around 5 days which is quite a short time for me, as I am quite busy this half term. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves a good read, and loves a different kind of book. I have seen people comparing this to the Hunger Games which I can see the link because they have the same kind of theme and feel to it, however I think they are VERY different, and I think that Divergent is much more action-packed whereas the Hunger Games is more of a skill-based book and I prefer Divergent!

I would rate it 5 stars and it is on my Top 5 books I have read in my 13 3/4 years of existence.

Hope you enjoyed my review (it was rather long!).
